Launched in 1989 in Barbados, the Caribbean Cup was a key qualifier for the CONCACAF Gold Cup, taking over from the earlier CFU Championship that was active from 1978 to 1988. Trinidad and Tobago, with eight wins, and Jamaica, with six wins, were the dominant teams, securing a total of 14 out of 18 championships. Other successful nations included Martinique, Haiti, Cuba, and Curaçao, who also clinched the title at various editions. In 1990, a political uprising in Trinidad and Tobago, the host country, led by the Jamaat al Muslimeen, ended the tournament prematurely, leaving behind only the final and 3rd place playoff. The event did not take place in 2000, 2002, and 2003. The 2017 tournament marked the 19th and final edition of the Caribbean Cup, as the focus shifted towards participating in the CONCACAF Nations League, leading to the discontinuation of the historic competition.
